Sustainable living, also known as self sufficiency, is a lifestyle in which one chooses to live by their own means in order to survive. It’s a big change compared to living on society’s depletion of natural resources, and energy costs.
One can’t simply choose to live self sufficiently overnight; in fact, if you live a normal conventional lifestyle, the process of sustainable living can take years to plan and conquer. This is due to the fact that you are decreasing or eliminating every corporate and society-based reliability in your life.
Here we’ll discuss how sustainable living affects several aspects of one’s life, and what practices are used to live comfortably off the land.
Shelter is one of the most difficult things to set up when it comes to sustainable living. Homes are built using green materials that have no reliability on society-based usage of natural resources, such as oil. In some cases, these houses are “off the grid”, meaning that they’re built to have no reliability on public water, sewer, or energy services. Power is retrieved by ways of solar or generator equipment.
When it comes to heat, wood stoves are a popular self sufficient method. Home owners will cut their own wood, as these homes are usually built in areas where there are a lot of trees. Homes themselves are built to have as little negative effect on the natural environment as possible.
Food is an important factor when it comes to sustainable living. Those living self sufficiently will take advantage of local farmers markets held in their place of residence. Another considerable method is creating ones own crops and greenhouses in order to grow vegetables and spices they can either use to eat or sell themselves at farmers markets.
Some of those who choose to live self sufficiently are vegetarians or vegans, while others who consume meat can either hunt, or build their own farm in order to shelter livestock. Self-built chicken coops are a popular sustainable living practice as well.
One great method of sustainable living that’s easy to practice is the creation and use of a compost bin. Composting your own food is a green technique used to recycle nutrients back into the earth. Compost can be used as a natural and nutrient-packed fertilizer when growing your own garden or crops.
Transportation when having a sustainable living lifestyle greatly varies. By having your own self sufficient home, you are greatly reducing your carbon footprint and your reliability on society-based energy usage. Because of this fact, many people who have a sustainable living lifestyle choose to still use a personal vehicle. Some argue that the creation and use of new solar and vegetable oil powered cars has a negative impact on the environment and finances. In those cases, old cars will be used and repaired when needed. Other people who live self sufficiently choose to ride bicycles, or take advantage of public transportation in their area.
When it comes to jobs, the ideal sustainable living situation is to make an income that allows you to live off the land. Many people with self sufficient employment cut and strip wood to sell, build and maintain farms, or start their own green-related businesses.
As stated before, these are just several crucial factors that affect ones life when living a sustainable living lifestyle. There are many resources, either Internet, written, or class room related that you can use to look further into self sufficiency.
