Industrial filters don’t just provide safety. They also save the environment. There are several types of industrial filters. Some are used in manufacturing processes to contain hazardous pollutants. Others are designed for use with process equipment for wastewater treatment facilities. They are used to trap particulate in water, soil and air. This shows the innate value of using filters to protect the environment.

Filters – A Wide Variety Of Uses

Industrial filters were originally used to collect dust particulate in coal mining industries. However, it was discovered that these filters could be used in processing various chemical powders, dry solvents and in processing dry food goods and cosmetics. They are small or large in size depending on the volume of particle to be trapped by the filter and hours in use. They are sometimes referred to as a “fabric filter”, although not all today are made from fabric. Some are made from polyvinyl. They may be attached to wire cages or large grid systems in what are known as “bag houses.” In this case, filters resemble large vacuum cleaner bags suspended from a grid system.

The Filter Coating Is Important

Because of the molecular weight of liquids and dry solids, the type of coating and density of the filter is important. As an example, water flocculants are used as the coating to filter wastewater and potable water. The coating prevents the particulate from passing through the fabric of the filter, in effect trapping sediment and pollutants. For more dense chemicals and those with specific corrosive qualities, the filters may require thicker fabric and a retardant-type of coating. In processes where dust and powders may be emitted into the air stream, the fabric of these types of filters may be a combination of woven-textured, composite materials.

Formerly, the biggest problem with controlling pollution to save the environment was disposal of the end product. Pollution control systems, such as filters for industrial use, were required to be disposed of at designated landfills by special transport. The cost was prohibitive to businesses and required increasing numbers of disposal sites.

Manufacturing facilities produce in high volume over a long duration of time. Thus, a facility that produces a simple product like baby powder may be adding powdery chemical ingredients to the process on a round-the-clock basis. Dust particles must be contained according to environmental compliance and OSHA safety regulation. Fitted with a comprehensive filter system, dust is trapped and the chemical ingredients are substantially contained. Today’s sophisticated industrial filter is designed to be far more biodegradable than in the past. By simply changing the coating and adjusting the cloth ratio, these filters cost less to dispose of and present less of a threat to the environment.
